About the Department
The Department of English and Media Studies had its inception in the year 1989.The department strives to enrich the language and aesthetic knowledge of students. Academic programs like webinars, workshops, guest lectures, seminars, panel discussions, mock press, film screenings etc. are organized to hone the skills of the students. These activities are spread throughout the academic year. The department offer certified Add on courses to complement the syllabi.
The college has the distinction of being the only college in South Bengaluru to offer a Vocational course with Optional English, Communicative English and Journalism as a combination.
Aims
The course aims to equip and enable students to become better communicators in all spheres related to the media.
Special Features
It is an industry driven course, which equips the students to face the challenges of the present day job scenario. The course is primarily vocational in nature and stresses on practical application rather than theoretical inputs. The students have to undergo a four week internship at the end of each semester.

Since 1989
Vijaya College, Jayanagar, erstwhile BHS First Grade College took its genesis in July 1989 under the BHS Managing Committee's(now BHS Higher Education Society) holistic awning. What ideated in 1988 germinated and took form in 1989 as BHS First Grade College.
The college motto 'Excellence in education' shines bright with the students' achievements in academics and extracurricular activities.
